Companies in Indonesia urged to enhance work health and safety

September 1, 2022

The government has urged firms to implement the Work Safety and Health Management System (SMK3) to protect workers and enhance work productivity.

Minister of Manpower Ida Fauziyah said, “The implementation of SMK3 is essential to bolster the effectiveness of work health and safety. SMK3 implementation will benefit companies, including (allowing them to) study companies’ adherence level to relevant laws on workplace safety and health.”

Fauziyah was speaking during a virtual discussion on “Strategies to Conceive Wage Structure and Scale, SMK3 Implementation, and its Legal Enforcement”. She said that the implementation of workplace safety and health guidelines could also enhance company productivity, reduce accidents in the workplace, and bolster company image.

Government Regulation No. 50 of 2012 mandates companies employing at least 100 workers or that are active in high-risk sectors to implement workplace safety and health guidelines, she said.

The Manpower Ministry has granted the SMK3 Award to at least 2,004 companies in 2022, she said, adding that the number has increased compared to the previous year, when 1,616 companies received the award.

Apart from the SMK3 regulation, the minister also urged companies to formulate and implement a wage structure and scale with due regard to productivity to achieve fair remuneration for employees.

“Based on Article 21 of Government Regulation Number 36 of 2021 concerning wages, the structure and scale of wages is an obligation that must be formulated and implemented by the company by taking capabilities and productivity into account,” she said, according to Antara.
